David Jones
David Jones is the founder of the SportsAbility Alliance (formerly the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association), a non-profit organization whose mission is promoting accessible inclusive recreation for all. He is a native and lifelong resident of Tallahassee, Florida.
In 1988, David was shot in a hunting accident resulting in a serious head injury that left him with permanent paralysis of his left side. In the process of his rehabilitation, he became aware of the importance of recreation for recovery — both physical and mental. That life-changing event became his personal crusade.
David went back to school and received his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Florida State University. In 1990, he formed the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association, which would become the SportsAbility Alliance — now celebrating its 36th year.
David is nationally recognized for his involvement in ADA compliance, consulting, and for successes in promoting community-based accessible and inclusive recreation. He has worked with national, state, county, and city agencies, completed ADA training with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Justice, and assisted in outdoor access training for fifteen National Wildlife Refuges from Florida to California. He helped Florida State Parks with their self-assessment and transition plans and has continued consulting for those award-winning parks.
He worked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission to develop accessible boating and fishing programs, and helped lead one of the nation's first Mobility Impaired Hunt programs.
David continues to produce the annual SportsAbility Expo — attended by thousands of families, professionals, and recreation providers across multiple Florida cities — and serves on numerous boards and committees advocating for inclusion in outdoor recreation.
His motto: "Active Leisure for Life."
